The Blacksburg Volunteer Rescue Squad also provides advanced technical woodland search and rescue in conjunction with the Southwest Va Mountain Rescue Group. SWVaMRG provides professional trained search management and field personnel for missions in Virginia as well as the mid Atlantic region. SWVaMRG is a member of the Appalachian Search and Rescue Conference and is a subsidiary of BVRS.
SWVaMRG members provide medical standbys for events in terrain conditions that require specialized training (i.e. mountain bike & cross-country horse races) and serve in conjunction with other emergency service organizations in response to natural and man-made disaster conditions. Services include all-weather search and rescue of missing persons and downed aircraft, complete search and rescue management, technical and semi-technical evacuations, and safety and survival education utilizing the latest advanced technical equipment.
SWVAMRG also conducts educational and training programs in subjects related to search and rescue, wilderness safety, and survival for the communities we serve. Examples include first aid and CPR classes, preventative search and rescue classes we teach in local schools and scout organizations, and wilderness education for a variety of local organizations.
